FIRST CIRCULAR
Outline:
The purpose of the East Asia International Workshop is to exchange present and long-term environmental information of East Asian region for clarifying environmental processes and changes in East Asia during the Quaternary.
The East Asia International Workshop was initially held in Daejeon, Korea (2004), and was subsequently in Kanazawa, Japan (2005), Seoul, Korea (2006), Nanjing, China (2007), Hakodate, Japan (2008), Taipei, Taiwan (2009) and Jeju Island, Korea (2010). The 8th Workshop (2011) will be held in Chengdu, China.
Main topics:
1. Landscape evolution and natural hazards: earthquake, landslide, debris-flow
2. Global changes and regional environmental change
3. Present lake-catchment processes and lacustrine sediment chronology
4. Dynamics of terrestrial processes and land use changes
5. Paleoclimate modeling and forecasting environment changes
6. Ecological response to human activity and natural variation and their interactions
Language and format:
The workshop will include Oral, Poster sessions and a Field excursion.
The official language for all presentations is English.
Abstracts will be required from all participants wishing to submit a poster or oral presentation in the workshop.
Fees:
Registration: 1300CNY (200 USD)
(Including a volume of abstracts, welcome party, lunches on Oct. 11-13)
One-day excursion: 330CNY (50 USD)
Banquet: 200CNY (30 USD)
Accommodation: The 4 star Hotel of Chengdu University of Technology. Hotel reservation for participants will be done by the host according to the responses. Standard single room or double room may cost about 350-450CNY/day (55-70USD/day).
Field Excursion: The epicenter of the Wenchuan earthquake and Dujiangyan ancient irrigation works
The 8.0-Magnitude Wenchuan Earthquake on 12th May 2008 brought about heavy casualties and big economic losses.
A field trip with academic exchange activities will visit the epicenter area of Yingxiu Town and the heavily damaged areas of Dujiangyan. Participants will observe large debris avalanches and landslides triggered by the earthquake and subsequent debris-flows. Along the way, you will visit Dujiangyan irrigation works, an ancient technological wonder of the country built in 250 B.C., which is one of the World Cultural Heritage sites.
Weather:
October in Chengdu is the autumn season. Generally the weather is mild. The temperature will usually be 18-24℃.
